Press boycotts assembly session

KARACHI: Journalists covering the Sindh Assembly proceedings have boycotted the remaining sessions of the House on April 9, due to misbehaviour and insulting attitude of police officials deputed at the main assembly gate.

Reporters and photographers held an emergency meeting at the assembly’s pressroom and condemned police’s bad behaviour with them. It was also observed that officials of the special branch not only treated the journalists badly at the main gate but also occupied press gallery, which is reserved for the media, and created hurdles in performing their professional duties.

Later, three ministers Imtiaz Shaikh, Irfan Gul Magsi and Qamar Mansoor assured the journalists that action would be taken against those who were responsible for this, and requested the mediamen to withdraw their protest.

However, the journalists stood to their point and informed the ministers that despite complaining twice during the current session, no action had been taken against the responsible persons, and declared that the boycott would continue till the authorities took some action.

The PPP members, Rafiq Engineer and Farheen Mughal, also assured the journalists that the Opposition would raise the issue in the House.
