KARACHI: Provincial Secretary Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) Sindh Kanwar Waseem said first aid training was very important for media practitioners whether they were in field or at home.

He was addressing the concluding ceremony of the three-day Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement Dissemination and First Aid Training Workshop for media personnel, which began on December 3 in the city on Thursday. The workshop was organised by the Pakistan Red Crescent Society Sindh branch in collaboration with the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC).

25 media practitioners attended the workshop from famous TV channels, newspapers and news agencies. Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) and Karachi Press Club (KPC) managements nominated the participants.

“We all are well aware of the fact that journalism is a service to society, and its role is to investigate facts and to inform the public,” said Waseem. “The journalists can play a very important role to pursue humanitarian diplomacy to prevent and reduce vulnerability in a globalised world.” Honorary Treasurer PRCS Sindh Shaikh Jalaluddin said accidents, bomb blasts and other emergencies were frequent in Karachi, with journalists generally being the first ones to arrive at the scene. If they know the basics of first aid, they can save many lives while also protecting themselves. Joint Secretary KPC Shams Keerio said the Sindh Red Crescent had filled a gap because there was high need of first aid training for journalists. He added that the journalist community hopes that Red Crescent would continue its services and enhance their capacity. He urged the management to establish a full-fledged equipped hospital in Karachi.

President KUJ Sajid Aziz also appreciated their efforts for organising first aid training workshop for journalists. He said the PFUJ & KUJ would always welcome and support Red Crescent humanitarian activities. Training Coordinator PRCS Dr Rizwana Wasif provided basic first aid training to participants, and emphasised on basic life support, bandages, bone fractures, giving first aid in case of a heart attack, snake biting, helping burn victims, shifting injured to hospital and other first aid methods.
