Pregnant woman murdered by in-laws

LAHORE: A pregnant woman was murdered in her house by her husband in the Mughalpura Police precincts on Friday.

The deceased’s brother, Muhammad Arif, alleged that his sister had been tortured by her in-laws and then strangled to death by them. The victim was identified as Sobia (21), a resident of Jameel Park, Sabzi Mandi.

Sobia, who lived with her parents in Mughalpura Waheed Colony, had eloped with Master Akbar, a resident Sabzi Mandi, around seven months ago. After their marriage, Sobia moved into Akbar’s parents house with him. Sobia’s family has said that she started to frequently have arguments with her in-laws over minor domestic issues just a few weeks after the marriage. Late on Thursday night, Sobia was found hanged under mysterious circumstances at her in-laws’ house. Her husband’s parents informed Sobia’s parents that Sobia had committed suicide. Sobia’s parents claimed to the police that Sobia had been tortured before getting strangled to death by her in-laws because of the frequency of the arguments they used to have with each other.

Suspicious: Mughalpura Police, during initial investigations, transported her body to the city morgue for an autopsy because they thought that Sobia’s ‘suicideÂ’ was suspicious. They registered a first information report (FIR) on the deceased’s brother’s complaint. The police also arrested Akbar for the alleged murder of his wife. Arif said that his sister had married Akbar of her own accord, adding that his family had not approved of the marriage. He said that his family had not given her dowry either, adding that her in-laws used to constantly argue with her because of this. He said that her husband used to demand large sums of money from her, adding that she had to deny every time as she had no place to get it from. He said that when he reached Sobia’s house, he found several marks all over her body. He alleged that Sobia’s in-laws had first tortured her, causing the marks, then strangled her to death. He alleged that they called him after they had decided that they would claim it was a suicide.

Confess: The Mughalpura Police station house officer (SHO) said that the arrested had confessed to having killed his wife while in police custody. He said that Akbar said that he had murdered his wife due to several domestic issues they faced. Akbar said that initially he had beaten her with sticks to punish her, adding that he later strangled her with a wire. The SHO said that the accused told the police that after killing the deceased, he hanged her by climbing on a charpai.
