PPP to hold local bodies’ elections initially in Sindh

HAMID WALEED

LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government will hold local bodies’ elections in Sindh initially and then rest of the provinces at later stage. Talking to Business Recorder, party sources said local bodies elections would be held partially in country, as the Punjab government was not looking ready to hold early elections of local bodies’.

It may be noted that the party Secretary Information Fauzia Wahab told reporters on Tuesday that President Asif Ali Zardari has instructed party members to start preparations for local bodies’ elections while presiding a meeting of party members at Bilawal House. Party sources said the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) was not ready to hold local bodies’ elections on time and the only way to tame it is to hold elections in Sindh where the PPP is in majority. They said, the PML-N would have no option but to hold elections in Punjab with rising pressure from political circles. It may be noted that the Punjab government has abstained from holding local bodies’ elections under newly-devised devolution plan of former President General Pervez Musharraf with trickling down financial autonomy to district councils.
