PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam re-elected to GFMD Steering Committee

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali was re-elected to the Global Forum for Media Development’s Steering Committee for the Asia region.

The new steering committee was elected at the GFMD General Assembly on September 30 and October 1 in Tirana, Albania.

During his first term as a member of the GFMD Steering Committee, Ali represented the GFMD as a co-chair of the Media Freedom Coalitions Consultative Network (MFC-CN) and at the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals at the United Nations.

PPF has been working on media development and to defend freedom of expression and safety of journalists in Pakistan and internationally for almost three decades. As the Secretary General, Ali has been part of initiatives of many international and intergovernmental organisations including the European Union, UNESCO, UNDP, National Endowment for Democracy, Internews, International Media Support, Open Society Foundation and Free Press Unlimited.

He has previously been elected to the board of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange several times and has also served as its convenor. He has previously served on the board of International Press Institute (IPI); as a member of the UNESCO Advisory Group on Press Freedom and as a member of the jury of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. Ali was previously a Chevening Fellow as well as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.
