PPF Journalism Training Workshop, Hiraabad

PPF organized a three-day (December 29-31, 2003) training workshop for journalists in Hiraabad, Hyderabad. There were 19 participants belonging to various professional fields. All participants demonstrated an outstanding awareness of social, political and economic issues.

With a high level of commitment to upgrade quality of life in their communities, the participants, displayed keen interest in PPF journalism-training workshop.

The PPF media trainers’ team consisted of Mr. Fazal Qureshi, Chief Editor, Pakistan Press International (PPI), and Mr. Ghulam Abbas Kassar, PPI correspondent in Hyderabad who was acted as the local organizer of workshop. The three-day workshop was held at the centrally located hall of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Sindh Chapter.

Lectures consisted of definition of news, news writing principles, concept of Inverted Pyramid and principle of 5 W’s and an H. Every lecture followed by a open exchange of questions and answers covering a wide range of subjects relating to journalism and freedom of press.

Every lecture was followed by practical exercise. The skill of writing articles, feat

ures and letters to the editor was also taught in the workshop.

At the end of the day, participants were also given practical exercises as homework. The last day of the workshop started with a discussion on the output of participants on article writing.

A large number of participants, both men and women, obtained high scores for selecting subject, writing effective intro and body of the article. The closing session was presided by Mr. Ali Hassan, a senior local journalist and vice chairperson of the HRCP in Sindh.

Mr. Ali Ahmad Loond, Director General Hyderabad Development Authority, was the chief guest. In his brief remarks, the Chief Guest was all praise for the workshop eulogizing its importance and utility. He pressed the view that more such workshops should be organized in the rural and semi rural areas of Sindh. Mr. Ali Hassan in his closing remarks appreciated the job PPF was carrying out for training journalists.

He also distributed certificates to the participants. The workshop ended with a vote of thanks to Ms. Nasreen Shakeel Pathan, Coordinator HRCP, who provided full facilities to PPF for holding of the workshop.
