Pakistan Press Foundation

K-Electric on Thursday initiated drive against unauthorised cable, TV and internet wires hanging on its electric poles throughout the city. The move comes in the wake of electrocutions of nearly 20 people in the recent two spells of monsoon rains in the city. It is relevant to mention here that Sindh Police in its report submitted before the IG Sindh Dr Kaleem Imam has said that heirs of victims have lodged around 10 first information reports (FIRs) against the power company in different police stations including Darakhshan, Paposh Nagar, Taimoria, Share Noor Jahan, Khwaja Ajmair Nagri, Gulbahar, SITE Superhighway, and Baghdadi police station.

The power company has blamed non KE wires causing damage to its infrastructure and bypass safety protection mechanisms. During the first day of operation, KE claimed to have removed nearly 1,400 kgs of illegal cables and kundas from its infrastructure in parts of Tipu Sultan, KMCHS, Khayaban-e-Shamsheer in DHA and surrounding areas.

An investigation is also underway to ascertain real causes behind the electrocutions; however the power utility said it is cooperating with investigations into the unfortunate incidents. In a statement KE spokesman said that remedial measures in light of the result of these investigations would be adopted. He said as per initial findings of investigations, majority of the incidents either occurred inside homes or due to non-KE infrastructure such as kundas and hanging lights etc., which are beyond the control of KE.
