Police asked to protect ‘Karo-Kari’ couple

Karachi: The Sindh High Court, allowing a woman to live with her husband, directed the Chakiwara police to provide protection to the couple. The direction came on a petition of Tanveer Abbas and Ms Shamshad, seeking protection from harassment by Shamshad’s family.

Tanveer Abbas submitted that he married Shamshad with her consent on November 16 which was opposed by the family of Shamshad and they were declared as Karo-Kari in Naushero Feroz.

The petitioner’s counsel, Shakeel Ahmed, seeking protection for the couple, submitted that the lives of the couple were in danger as the family of Shamshad had been bent upon killing them.

Shamshad’s father opposed the petition and submitted that his daughter had already been married and produced a marriage certificate. However, Shamshad informed the court that she had not been married previously and that the marriage certificate produced by her father was fake.

The court, after hearing the case, allowed the woman to live with her husband and ordered the police to provide protection to them. The court observed that both the parties were at liberty to move the family court for jactitation of the marriage.
