PM’s brother wins Multan, PML-N candidate DG Khan by-polls

DG KHAN/MULTAN: While the prime minister’s brother, Syed Ahmad Mujtaba Gilani, won the by-polls from PP-206 Jalalpur Pirwala, a Pakistan Muslim League-N candidate, Sardar Mir Badshah Khan Qaisrani, was elected to the Punjab Assembly from PP-240 constituency in the Dera Ghazi Khan district, according to unofficial results.

Pakistan People’s Party candidate, Ahmad Mujtaba Gilani, defeated PML-N’s Naghma Mushtaq Laang, by a margin of well over 5,000 votes. Returning officer’s office sources said Mujtaba Gilani bagged 38,035 votes while his rival, Naghma Laang, got 32,313 votes.

Meanwhile, Mujtaba Gilani suffered a minor injury after people from his rival group allegedly attacked his car in Jalalpur Pirwala, some 88 km from Multan on Saturday evening, PM’s media coordinator Kh Rizwan Alam said. He said the PPP candidate had gone to Jalalpur Pirwala when a number of people from his rival group attacked his car with batons, breaking its glasses. A glass piece also hit his head causing a minor injury, the PPP leader said.

In PP-240 DG Khan by-polls, Badshah Khan Qaisrani was elected to the assembly with 53,188 votes, while an independent contestant Khwaja Salahuddin Akbar remained second with 30,509 votes.

Former naib tehsil nazim Tufail Qaisrani and former member zila council Tahir Muhammad Abdullah Khan Qaisrani alleged that they were subjected to torture by the supporters of Sardar Mir Badshah at a polling station in Kot Qaisrani.

They said they had tried to stop the supporters from rigging. Kh Salahuddin alleged that his rival candidate polled record votes in the tribal area through rigging and his polling agents were beaten up. However, Mir Badshah denied the charges.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the use of force and rigging in by-elections could cause political loss to the PPP. Talking to the media in Jalalpur Pirwala, the law minister alleged that the son of PM Yusuf Raza Gilani was seen carrying weapons at some polling stations.
