ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has submitted an adjournment motion in the National Assembly Secretariat against continuous harassment of senior journalist Umar Cheema.

The adjournment motion was submitted by PML-N parliamentarians Chaudhry Birjees Tahir, Anosha Rehman, Bilal Yaseen and others on Tuesday. Quoting press clippings of newspapers dated October 25 (Monday), the adjournment motion said according to the news items, ‘The News’ staffer Umar Cheema and his family while riding their car were chased by the same vehicle on Friday last in which he was abducted, last month.’

The PML-N parliamentarians have noted with concern that despite time and again assurance in and outside parliament, the government had not been able to expose the elements involved in abduction of Umar Cheema on the 4th of the last month when he was also subjected to brutal torture.

Through adjournment motion, the PML-N members wanted discussion on the issue concerning freedom of the press on floor of the lower house of parliament. Journalist and human rights organisations have also been protesting against inhuman treatment meted out to Cheema and continuation of his harassment.
