PM to announce information policy in third week, says Ahsan

ISLAMABAD (APP): Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will announce the national information policy, with focus on encouraging the private sector to take lead in the field of communications technology and software development, in the third week of February.

Another aspect of focus of the policy will be the use of information technology as a means for poverty alleviation and removal of disparity in access to quality education.

This was stated by Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Ahsan lqbal while speaking to the communications and information study group of the Sustainable Policy Development institute.

The minister of state informed the group that the government has decided to award personal computers (PC) to the best students in the country and, for this purpose, appropriate merit and criteria are being determined.

The parliamentary secretary for information, Anwar-ul-Haq Ramay, emphasised the need for greater interaction between experts on information technology and the legislators.

Ramay said he would strongly support the move to introduce new cyber laws to address the legal issues created by new information technology.

Earlier, the study group heard two presentations by Salman Ansari, chief executive, Supernet, and Dr Khawaja, head of Pakistan Computer Bureau. Dr Khawaja briefed the group on the ‘millenium bug’, or the year 2000 computer problems.

The SDPI study group on information and communications holds regular study groups which bring together eminent experts, policy makers and businessmen dealing with information technology. It has been meeting regularly since 1992 under the chairmanship of Dr ljaz Shafi Gilani. The principal coordinator of the group is Brig. Mohammad Yasin
