PM Shehbaz Sharif Underscores Need to Combat Misinformation on Social Media to Tackle Extremism
On January 3, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscored the need to address the rising challenge of misinformation and fake news circulating on social media, calling it inevitable for eliminating terrorism and extremism from Pakistan.
Chairing a meeting of the Apex Committee on the National Action Plan, the prime minister highlighted the dangers posed by false narratives spread online, often originating from foreign elements.
“On digital front, the venom against Pakistan is being spitted through social media from some elements abroad. This is also a big challenge, which is supported by distorted facts and twisted reality,” PM said during the meeting. He added, “If we don’t counter this challenge, all efforts (to eliminate terrorism and extremism in the country) will go waste.”
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, members of the federal cabinet, provincial chief ministers, Chief of Army Staff, and other senior officials.
PM Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over the impact of fake news on the state’s image. Recounting an incident of misinformation, he referred to the spread of fake news regarding the martyrdom of Rangers personnel on November 26. He emphasized the immense sacrifices of Pakistan’s armed forces, assuring the nation that their efforts would not be wasted as the country continues its journey toward stability and progress.
