PIP seminar on Role of Media in National Defence Pakistan won 1965 war thru media: Speakers

LAHORE: Media played an important role in the defence of Pakistan. The 1965 war was in fact a media war and Pakistani media won this war by bringing the whole nation together with the Pak forces.

Media united the nation again when .the earth quack struck the country in October 2005 and its role in restoration of judiciary is also commendable.

These remarks were made at a seminar “Role of media in National Defence of Pakistan” at Hameed Nizami Press Institute of Pakistan (PIP) that was hosted by Director PIP Rafique Alam. Former chief justice Lahore High Court Justice Mian Mahboob Ahmad said the national defence is both territorial and ideological and media should focus on the ideology which was in the roots of Pakistan. He said media must be cautious about the national interests while reporting the sensitive issues and media men acting like judges should be gentle and exercise restraints instead of being aggressive.

He called upon the electronic media not to project obscenity and vulgarity and take care of preserving national interests. Mian Mahboob regretted that our institutions could not thrive as the leadership that had achieved a separate homeland passed away in the early years after the independence of Pakistan.

So the fate of country fell into the hands of `troika’ consisting of those raised by the Britishers hi bureaucrats and jagirdars. He said this class took over the national re- sources and threw the country off its ideology track. He said Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Au Jinnah had visualised a Constitution, which had Islamic republic colour but not that of `papacy’. He said Quaid e-Azarn believed in demo1racy but we failed to live up to his ideas.

President National F’orutn Col (B) lkramullah said that Nawa-i-Waqt Group is playing important role in the ideological defence of Pakistan. He said the national defence depends on national power that includes armed forces, skilled manpower and resources.

He also applauded the role of media, particularly that of Nawe-i-Waqt during the Pakistan movement. He appreciated the efforts of Chairman Nawa-i-Waqt group Majid Nizami in promoting ideology of Pakistan and inculcating the same in the youth as well As building their character.

The Muslim world should develop a joint media policy to counter the western media, he further said.

Ex-DGPR Khawaja Tahir Jameel said that media made history when the judges were restored. He said it was the age of ‘intellectual slavery’ and the western media that is controlled by the Jews, making full use of it, is promoting its national interest. We won 1965 war because of the positive role played by the media Fall of Dhaka resulted because media was curbed to play its role and India succeeded in its propaganda, he further said.

Arfa Rasheed, a writer, said media should not promote Indian culture. Minhajul Quran Director Interfaith Department Sohail Ahmed Raza said that media plays an important role in the development of society and Pakistani media also needs to play an active role in this regard. He underscored the need of launching more and more ideological programmes.
