RAWALPINDI: The website for the Rawalpindi police department, rawalpindipolice.gov.pk, was apparently ‘hacked’ on Wednesday.

Early in the day, visitors to the website started being redirected to a pornographic webpage, while mobile users complained the site tried to download malicious software to their phones if they tried to access it.

By Wednesday evening, the site went offline, ostensibly taken down for repairs. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the hack and there were no online claims of responsibility.

But Rawalpindi police vehemently denied the incident.

A spokesperson for the police, Inspector Raja Fayyaz, told Dawn the Pindi police website had been down “for months” and had not been reactivated for some time.
