PFUJ Elects New Leadership; Determined to Work for the Welfare of Journalists

The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has elected its new leadership for a two-year term, with election results announced at the National Press Club on February 23. The newly elected body showed commitment to work towards the welfare of journalists.
Chairman Election Committee Iqbal Jafari declared the results, announcing Afzal Butt as the President. The Vice Presidents elected include Habib ur Rehman, Khalid Esa Kokhar, Muhammad Esa, and Nasir Hussain. Arshad Ansari was chosen as Secretary General, with Jamshad Rizwani, Javed Asghar, Muhammad Shahid Ch, and Noor Elahi Bugti serving as Assistant Secretaries. The position of Finance Secretary was secured by Saeed Jahan, also known as Lala Asad Pathan.
Additionally, 24 members were elected to the Federal Executive Council (FEC), including Abdul Rehman (Lala Rehman), Ali Raza Alvi, Ejaz Maqbool, and others.
Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani extended his congratulations to the newly elected body. He said this reflected the trust of the journalists’ community in their leadership.
Gilani highlighted the crucial role of an independent press in a democratic society. He stressed the media’s critical role in keeping the public informed and holding governments and institutions accountable.
Gilani reaffirmed the Parliament’s commitment to address journalists’ challenges adding that “all necessary measures would be taken to protect media professionals and resolve their concerns.”
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari also congratulated the newly elected leadership, acknowledging the roles of President Afzal Butt and Secretary General Arshad Ansari. She recognized PFUJ’s ongoing efforts in advocating for press freedom and journalists’ rights.
Bokhari affirmed the Punjab government’s stance on protecting press freedom and journalists’ rights, adding that concrete steps were being implemented. She stated that “historic initiatives” were being taken for the journalists’ community under Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Bokhari expressed confidence in the newly elected PFUJ officials, stating that they would play a “proactive role” in addressing the challenges faced by media professionals.
