PFUJ, APNEC condemn murder of Hayatullah

KARACHI, June 17 2006: The Pakistan Federal of Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and the (AII Pakistan Newspapers Employees Confederation (APNEC), in a press release have condemned. the murder of senior journalist Hayatullah Khan, whose body was found on June 16, six months after he was abducted and suspected the role of government agencies and the US in the incident.

The two apex bodies of the newspaper employees have decided to observe ‘Black-Day’ on June 19, during which protest demonstrations will be held and journalists ‘will boycott the Assembly sessions. There have been sudden rise in violence against journalists in different parts of the country. Only in Sindh, there have been six incidents in a month, including the killing of Munir Sangi.

President of the PFUJ and Chairman APNEC, Pervez Shaukat, Secretary General, PFUJ Mazhar Abbas, Secretary General APNEC, Nasir Chisti and their affiliated unions expressed their deep sorrow over the murder of Khan. They also demanded of the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry to take suo-motu notice of the kidnapping and murder of Khan and appoint a judicial commission.

The leaders of the two apex bodies of the newspaper employees said that for the last six months they have been demanding of the government to use all means to recover Khan, but a government minister termed his kidnapping ‘personal dispute. “Hayatullah Khan was abducted and killed for his reporting on the US bombing and there could be a link between the two,” they said. According to the information received from PFUJ’s affiliate Khyber Union of Journalists, Khan’s body was found in Pir Wali in the tribal areas. PFUJ had feared for his life but the government refused to take any notice which resulted in his brutal murder. PFUJ and APNEC leaders demanded security for the journalists, particularly for those working in the conflict areas like NWFP and Balochistan.
