Peshawar journalist kidnapped, thrashed by armed men

PESHAWAR: A local journalist was kidnapped from the Grand Trunk Road and thrashed by armed men before he was thrown near the district and session courts in an injured condition on Monday.

Zahid Merokhel, a reporter of Urdu daily Nayee Baat, was on his way to office when armed men travelling in a white pick-up truck (Mardan-5252) intercepted him near the Balahisar Fort on the GT Road and started beating him inside the vehicle.

The injured journalist was thrown near the district and session courts after the criminals’ vehicle developed some fault. He was taken to the Lady Reading Hospital and treated for his injuries. A case was registered against unknown criminals at the Khan Raziq Shaheed (Kabuli) Police Station.

The bureau chief of the newspaper, Fida Khattak, said the reporter had recently filed stories exposing corrupt senior government officials. The Khyber Union of Journalists, the Peshawar Press Club and Crimes and Terrorism Journalists Forum condemned the reporter’s kidnapping and asked the authorities to arrest the culprits at the earliest.
