PEMRA issues notices to 17 TV channels for airing false, fake news

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Thursday issued Show Cause Notices to 17 Satellite TV Channels that air news & current affairs programmes.

The SCNs were issued on airing false and fake news pertaining to orders of the Lahore High Court (LHC) banning anti-judiciary speeches of the ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz.

All these news channels aired false fake news in violation of PEMRA Code of Conduct 2015 which compels channels to on-air accurate and authentic news and information to the viewers, the notice said.

Satellite TV Channels, having issued show cause notices included Geo News, Royal News, Din News, Samaa TV, Dawn News, ARY News, Waqt News, Bol News, KTN News, Kohinoor TV, Mashriq TV, Roze News, 92 HD News, Dunya TV, Channel 5, Aaaj TV and Express News.

Furthermore, all the news channels have been asked to show cause and appear for a personal hearing before PEMRA on April 24, 2018. In case no response is received, legal action will be initiated in accordance with section 29 & 30 of the PEMRA Ordinance, the notice read.
