Pemra holds meeting to define ‘obscenity’

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has received valuable input from participants of the second consultative meeting to define the term ‘obscenity’ for electronic media, says a press release issued here on Friday.The meeting was held in Karachi and the participants represented different segments of the society.

The first session on this issue was held on August 27 at Pemra headquarters here in compliance with the orders of the Supreme Court on the petitions filed by Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Justice (R) Wajhiuddin Ahmed on vulgarity and obscenity on media.

In the first session, representatives of Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) and Cable Operators Association of Pakistan (CAP) were not available due to Eid holidays. The meeting was attended by Qazi Hussain Ahmed (former chief of Jamaat-e-Islami), Muhammad Hussain Mehanti (Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chapter chief), Justice (R) Wajihud Din Ahmed, Lt Gen (R) Abdul Qayyum, Dr Mehdi Hassan, Muhammad Ziauddin, Asif Luqman Qazi, Mazhar Abbass, Jawad Hamid Raja (PBA) and Shakeel Masud (PBA).

Khalid Arain, Cable Operators Association Pakistan (CAP) chairman, Tahir Javaid (CAP), Imran Nadeem (CAP), Ikhlaq Ahmed (CAP), Haseena Moeen, Kishwar Naheed,Sheema Kirmani, Marvi Sirmad, Samina Peerzada, Naila J Deyal, Khanam Tayyaba Bukhari, Advocate Fiaza Khalil, Ayesha Anas, Mahrukh Akhtar, Atia Nisar, Syed Hamza Mateen, Dr Abid Rauf and representatives from Pakistan Advertisers Society (PAS), United Producers Association and Pemra officials also attended the meeting.

A comprehensive report on the proceedings of both consultative meetings will subsequently be submitted to the apex court in the forthcoming hearing fixed on September 17.
