PEMRA holds hearing for allowing FM radio licences

QUETTA- Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on October 3, 2002 held hearing for bidders for opening of FM radio stations in Balochistan.

Salim Gul, member PEMRA told sources that by holding hearing in Quetta, PEMRA has completed all legal requirements to issue licenses to for thirty FM radio stations throughout the country. Of them two are for Balochistan i.e. Gawadar and Hub.

He said that in all 67 parties had applied for setting up FM radio stations in the country. Of them 22 were short-listed while thirteen succeeded in the bidding held in Islamabad on September 21 last.

He further said that the amount of bid varied from place to place from Rs 3.5 million in Karachi to Rs 0.1 million for tiny towns.

The cities and towns for which licenses had been approved included Karachi, Lahore Islamabad, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Saria Norang, Peshawar, Sukkur, Multan, Bahawalpur, Vihari, Changla Gali, and Muridke, besides Gawadar, and Hub in Balochistan. There was no application for Quetta.

He said the licenses to the successful bidders would be issued in a few days as all necessary formalities had been completed.

He said licenses for satellite television would also be granted during the current month.

Salim Gul further stated that setting up of radio and television stations would offer healthy competition among the private sector and with the public sector. It will also remove the objection that only public sector radio and TV are functioning the country.

Another NEPRA member from Balochistan Ms. Seemeen Naghmana Tahir, Chairperson Mass Communication Balochistan University and General Manger Licenses PEMRA Syed Fayyaz Hussain were also present on the occasion.
