Pemra forbids private channel from showing Indian soaps

LAHORE: In response to a petition filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC), Pemra confirmed in writing that a private TV channel was not entitled to broadcast any Indian dramas and that the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) had already issued a number of show-cause notices to the company that distributes the channel in Pakistan.

It may be recalled that five leading domestic entertainment channels of Pakistan have filed a writ petition in the LHC praying for direction to Pemra to stop the illegal transmissions of the said channel in Pakistan.

In response to the petition, Pemra produced copies of the channel’s licence in Pakistan along with the approved mix of programmes showing that Pemra had never allowed it to broadcast any Indian content in Pakistan. According to Pemra, the channel is required to broadcast ‘foreign content’ only after dubbing it in the Urdu language.

Pemra produced copies of the show-cause notices that it had sent to the channel, directing it to immediately stop broadcasting any Indian drama. A final show-cause notice has also been issued to the channel. When the petitioners pointed out that despite Pemra’s show-cause notices, the channel continued with its illegal transmission, LHC directed Pemra to complete its process of hearing and submit its final conclusions within ten days.
