Pemra directs TV channels to stop excessive Indian content

Pakistan Press Foundation

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has asked the satellite TV channels and distribution networks to discontinue excessive Indian content and airing of Indian channels through illegal Direct to Home (DTH).

Considering the rising number of complaints against excessive Indian content, it is appropriate that all the satellite TV channels and distribution networks follow the law of land and voluntarily discontinue all illegal activities immediately, a press release issued by Pemra on Thursday said.

This will send a positive signal to the public about the satellite TV channels and distribution networks’ commitment with rule of law and the country about which a huge number of talk shows preach daily.

The Pemra has warned that strict action would be taken according to law after October 15 if TV channels and distribution networks failed to follow the directions. The authority said it was receiving numerous complaints on illegal Indian content being aired on satellite TV channels and distribution networks as well as through illegal Indian DTH.

The complainants have shown serious concerns on this issue in the wake of current situation between India and Pakistan and have urged the authority to impose immediate ban on broadcast and distribution of illegal Indian content and illegal Indian DTH. It may be mentioned here that Pemra has already issued directives on restricting illegal Indian content on Pakistani TV channels and distribution networks and on illegal Indian DTH.
