ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has directed the electronic media to duly observe the sanctity of the holy month of Muharram.

The Pemra directive, issued yesterday to all TV channels, FM Radio and Cable TV licensees, asked all the media outlets to observe the teachings of Islam and warned not to relay or distribute any programme against the sanctity of this holy month.

TV channels in particular have been reminded of their utmost responsibility and are asked to exercise extra care while conducting religious programmes as they should not, in any manner, incite or fan religious discrimination, intolerance or hatred.

The Pemra circular stated that no programme shall be aired or distributed in contravention to the PEMRA Code of Conduct which inter-alia refrains from passing derogatory remarks about any religion, sect, community, uses and words contemptuous of religious sects and ethnic group or which promotes communal and sectarian attitudes or disharmony. Similarly, no programme would be tolerated which may provoke hatred against individual or group on the bases of race, ethnicity and religious orientation.

The electronic media has also been directed to craft special programs persuading viewers to shun sectarian activities and discard animosity, hatred, malevolence and differences by following the great Islamic principles of human values such as faith, tolerance, courage, brotherhood and fraternity for the prosperity and welfare of our country as well as Muslim Ummah.

Acting Chairman PEMRA said that any non-conformity to these directives would be taken seriously that may result into imposition of heavy fines, suspension or revocation of licenses of violators under PEMRA law.
