Pemra decides to cancel licence of TV cable defaulters

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) unequivocally resolved to uphold it’s writ in letter and spirit and implement its laws vigorously.

It was decided in the meeting that defaulters and violators in broadcast and distribution sector be thrashed out and legitimate business entrepreneurs be supported.

It was decided in the 65th meeting of the Authority that was convened at the Pemra headquarters, Islamabad To augment the Authority’s efforts, it was decided that licences of those cable TV networks that have not paid their outstanding dues within stipulated timeframe and despite repeated reminders and show cause notices be revoked. Names of the cable TV operators whose licences have been revoked due to non-payment of dues are. M/s. Karachi Cable Services, M/s. Media Plus Communications & M/s. City Communications, Karachi.

In pursuit of ensuring sources of information and entertainment to every nook and corner of the country, the Authority revoked 284 licences which were either inoperative or some were involved in violating licence terms & conditions. The Authority expressed its commitment to confer licences to the interested parties, which could establish their networks within six months of receipt of licences through fair and transparent bidding process.

In order to curb violations vis-‡-vis relaying illegal satellite TV and CD channels, the Authority cancelled four cable TV licences. Names of the cable TV networks cancelled by the Authority in 65th meeting are: M/s. Logi Tech Cable TV Network, M/s. Nasic Broadband Communication Pvt. Ltd. Lahore, M/s. T A Star Cable Network, Faisalabad, M/s. Show Time Cable Networks, Karachi.

M/s. Media Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Tharparkar, M/s. Mehran Media Pvt. Ltd. Shikarpur, Naushero Feroze, Sanghar & Badin were imposed fines to the tune of Rs.100000/- each for contravening standards / parameters with regards to services / networks as developed by the Authority.

Moreover, the Authority imposed a fine of Rs.500000/ to M/s. Chakwalians (SMC Pvt. Ltd.) for violating Pemra rules and regulations. Executive Member, Pemra Dr. Abdul Jabbar briefed the Authority about the enforcement pursuits of Pemra Operations Wing during the past few months, whereby, 430 cable TV networks were raided, equipments of 179 cable TV networks were confiscated and subsequently systems were seized besides imposing heavy fines.

The meeting was chaired by the Chairman Pemra Mushtaq Malik and was attended by Secretary Information Mansoor Sohail, Chairman FBR Sohail Ahmed, Chairman PTA Dr. Muhammad Yaseen and Executive Member Pemra Dr. Abdul Jabbar.
