Pemra chief files contempt of court plea with IHC

Pakistan Press Foundation

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) Chaudhry Rashid Ahmad Thursday filed a contempt of court application with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) saying that he was stopped from entering his office despite IHC stay orders of December 16.

The Pemra chairman alleged that Rao Tehsin, who was appointed by the federal government as new Pemra chief, in connivance with secretary information and secretary establishment, has been creating hurdles in the implementation of an IHC restraining order that had temporarily restored him to his slot.

Rashid also alleged that on December 17 when he proceeded to his office at Pemra headquarters Islamabad he started receiving threats from some miscreants, and that Rao Tehsin had instigated Pemra employees who blocked his entry into the office and took law into their hands. The appellant told the court that he had filed an application before the inspector general of police, reported the incident and sought personal protection.

Ch Rashid in his contempt of court application prayed to the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the respondents. Justice Riaz Ahmad Khan will hear this matter today (Friday).
