Pearl’s widow has no problem with death penalty to Sheikh Omar

WASHINGTON- The French widow of abducted and slain US journalist Daniel Pearl said on Monday that she would not mind the execution of Sheikh Omar, the chief suspect in the case, calling him “a nuisance for humanity.”

“I would certainly not cry over his death because I think this guy is a nuisance for humanity basically,” said Mariane Pearl, appearing on PBS’s program News Hour with Jim Lehrer.”

US Attorney General John Ashcroft announced in Washington last Thursday that a grand jury had indicted Omar, 29, for the kidnapping and murder of Pearl, a Wall Street Journal correspondent. He also demanded that Pakistan turn him over to US authorities for trial.

If convicted, Omar could face the death penalty.

“I’ll be satisfied when they have everybody arrested and punished and justice is done only,” said Mariane Pearl, who is currently in the United States for meetings with US officials.

She said that she had already met here with President George W Bush, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of State Colin Powell to discuss the case.

Mariane Pearl said that she would like to see people around the world fight terrorism without “being hijacked by fear.”
