Particular forces unleash anti-judiciary propaganda

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is never short of lame excuses and sick-minded arguments when it comes to competition and the same has happened in the case of Geo TV telecasting exclusive footage of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s farewell reference.

Those lawyers, journalists and media organs against whom the Supreme Court had either taken notice or delivered decisions ganged up against the judiciary. Those having vested interests and such lawyers who already intended to defame the outgoing CJ also ganged up. It was already being said that on retirement, propaganda against the outgoing CJ would be unleashed.

Instead of working hard to dig out big stories, the Pakistani media likes to blame the Jang Group for being hands in glove with institutions or vice versa about which a story is done.

If this argument of media houses is accepted, then the very concept of investigative journalism, because of which big stories of public interest are unearthed before the general public, will die down and journalism will be left as mere statements and reports of events. A few media houses would like only such type of journalism because they have many other businesses that are being protected by their media houses that provide a cover.

Geo TV’s senior correspondent Abdul Qayyum Siddiqui got the footage of the full court reference of the farewell being given to Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry while the reporters of all other television channels were smoking cigarettes and enjoying hot cups of tea.

The moment Geo aired the footage, other television channels started uttering filth against Geo, which for obvious reasons, was out of jealously. The channels did not even spare Justice Iftikhar and not only blamed him for only allowing Geo to cover the event (which was never the case) but also criticised the performance of the judiciary under Justice Iftikhar.

For journalists, it is a routine matter to break exclusive news for their respective channels and newspapers and if one journalist brings a good story he is appreciated by others and other journalists of his beat work harder to bring more good stories. A good journalist gives a tough time to his counterparts in other organizations but it never happens anywhere in the world that if a journalist brings a good story, the entire lot of channels/newspapers starts a propaganda war against that channel.

But for the Pakistani media, getting far behind in competition doesn’t matter as the channels know if Geo would air any exclusive news, it is high time to bash Geo.

Whenever there is a blast or any other significant event in the country, television channels are seen showing video footage of the blast claiming that they are the first one to obtain the footage and are showing it to the public. No one ever bashed other channels for taking the lead in obtaining the footage. However, on Wednesday, when the footage obtained by Geo was aired, it became “Geo Vs Rest of the Channels” war, instead of appreciating the reporter and the channel for bringing an exclusive story.

Among the Geo bashers was also a television channel whose anchors were caught conspiring against the same chief justice last year when off-camera footage was released on internet in which two anchors were caught red-handed doing a planted interview against Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. The CJ took notice of the planted interview and the channel had to face utmost embarrassment before 180 million Pakistanis. It was perhaps the venom of hatred against Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry that the channel was keeping in it and made Geo’s exclusive story as an excuse and bashed both, the CJ and Geo.

It was a day of jackals as many shockingly saw all vested interests and mafias unite on all channels condemning the CJP. It seems the CJP had provoked all vested interests. Only saints could evoke such a unanimous wrath. This country has never seen good and evil as divided as it is today. We are at the end or beginning of a phase. Battle lines are clearly drawn.
