Parliamentary Secretary Assures Internet Speed Improvement, 5G Launch by Mid 2025

On February 12, Parliamentary Secretary for Information Technology, Sabreen Ghori, assured the National Assembly that internet speed in the country would improve by mid-2025, with the launch of 5G expected by mid-2025.

During the question hour, Ghori acknowledged concerns over slow internet speed, stating: “There are several reasons for internet slowdowns.” Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) member Agha Rafiullah highlighted connectivity issues, complaining: “No videos can be downloaded, the internet does not work at all at times.”

Another PPP lawmaker, Shagufta Jumani, referenced a previous remark by PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto, saying: “There is some fish that only eats Pakistan’s cable.” Responding humorously, Ghori said: “There is some fish that cuts the internet cable, but we don’t know which fish it is.”

On February 3, the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology urged the finalisation of an agreement with Starlink. Chaired by Aminul Haq, the committee discussed key projects, including the IT Ministry’s budget for FY 2024-25. Haq directed officials to expedite the licensing process for Starlink. The parliamentary secretary had confirmed that the service would be available by June 2025.
