Pakistan’s Global Ranking for Internet Shutdowns Jumps to Second Globally

Pakistan experienced 1,861 hours of internet shutdowns in 2024, ranking second globally after Myanmar, according to Top10VPN. These disruptions impacted 83 million users and led to an estimated $351 million in economic losses. The duration marked a 619% increase from 2023, when shutdowns lasted 259 hours, moving Pakistan from seventh to second globally.

The Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) reported that each hour of internet downtime costs $1 million.

Cloudflare reported an annual decline in Pakistan’s web traffic throughout most of 2024. During the first 11 months, only 30 days saw positive growth, with a peak rate of 3%, compared to a global average of 17%. Average internet speeds in Pakistan remained at 22 Mbps, far behind the Philippines (97 Mbps), Bangladesh (37 Mbps), and Indonesia (31 Mbps).

The year has been marred with internet disruptions and issues with connectivity (mobile and internet).  At the end of the year, the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) documented at least 19 instances of disruption to internet access, social media platforms, and mobile services.
