Pakistani journalists honoured
ISLAMABAD, April 21 2006: Two Pakistani reporters have been honoured at the 2006 Developing Asia Journalism Awards (Daja) held in Manila, says a press release.
Tahira Sarwar, 28, of Irin News was named runner up in the Women and Development category of the awards, sponsored by the Tokyo-based Asian Development Bank (ADB) Institute and ADB headquartered in Manila. Shahid Hussain, 54, was awarded second runner up in the Poverty Issues category.
Tahira Sarwar’s entry addressed the issue of honour killing of women for illicit relationships in Balochistan. Hussain’s awarded entry for the Herald described how rising prices and falling incomes and rampant unemployment appeared to be pushing Pakistan’s poor over the edge.
