Pakistan TV, Radio to get freedom on reporting

ISLAMABAD- Information Minister Nisar A Memon said on Thursday that Pakistan Television (PTV) and Radio Pakistan will be granted institutionalised freedom through a clearly laid out policy to bolster the quality of their news.

“The freedom of the two channels will be permanent so that nobody may attempt to reverse it in future – the pressure from within the society will make it irreversible,” he told a one-day conference of PTV and Pakistan broadcasting corporation (PBC) reporters and editors.

Former Information Ministers Irshad Ahmed Haqqani, Jawed Jabbar, Secretary Information Syed Anwar Mahmood, Director General PBC Tariq Main, Managing Director, Yousuf Beg Mirza and senior officials of the national electronic media attended the conference.

Nisar asked the news staff of the two organisations to draw up a policy framework defining the job title, job concept, job description, roles and responsibilities of the news staff.

“It is the news staff of the two organisations that should come out with clearly defined concepts and a strategy for improvement – they may also identify steps for enhancing the credibility, introducing new modes of news presentation and professionalism in of their news bulletins.

The participants from the national electronic media were divided into three groups for concrete suggestions in this regard.
