Pakistan security agencies to create special department to deal with cyber crimes

ISLAMABAD- Kidnapping and subsequently killing Daniel Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter, has forced Pakistani security agencies to create a special department to deal with cyber crimes.

Interior Minister Lieutenant General Moinuddin Haidar (Retd) has directed some senior officers to study the requirement of creating such department, sources said.

The minister has directed to constitute a special committee on the issue in collaboration with private sector and computer experts to prepare a comprehensive report.

This committee will finalise its recommendations within a period of one month for the creation of such department, sources said.

According to sources, this issue was raised in a recent inter-provincial meeting on law and order by a senior police officer from Sindh.

The police officer pointed out that the killing of Daniel Pearl has proved that the terrorist and criminal groups are using modern cyber techniques to commit crime and hide themselves successfully, sources said.

He pointed out that in Daniel case the criminals used cyber techniques and left no clue for law and order agencies.

The meeting noted that Pakistani law enforcing agencies are not capable to tackle such crimes.

The ministry for interior has decided to seek help from US and China in order to provide training and technical facilities to Pakistani officials.

The minister has also assured to allocate special funds for the purchase of required equipment and training of the staff.
