Pakistan Press Foundation condemns the ruling of KL Appeal Court in the case of political cartoonist Zunar

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), an independent non-governmental institution committed to promoting and defending freedom of expression is concerned over recent ruling of Kuala Lumpur Appeal Court issued on 1st November, 2013 in case of political cartoonist Zunar .

Quoting the information from Reporters Without Borders, PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in a letter to the Prime Minister of Malaysia said, Quote “Appeal of cartoonist Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Haque, against the ruling on 21st July, 2012 that his arrest in September 2010 and seizure of all copies of newly published collection of his cartoons named Cartoon-o-phobia were carried out illegally under the Sedition Act, was rejected by the Appeal Court. The ruling upholds the government’s position that publication of book having political cartoons was an act of criminal subversion. The cartoonist was held for two days after his arrest on 24th September, 2010”.
