Pakistan Press Foundation condemns the killing of journalist Mario Sy

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), an independent non-governmental institution committed to promoting and defending freedom of expression, is concerned over the killing of journalist Mario Sy who contributed photos to tabloid newspaper Sapol News Bulletin (On Target News Bulletin). He was shot dead in General Santos City in the province of South Cotabato on 1 August 2013.

Quoting the information from Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility CMFR, an unidentified gunman entered the home of photojournalist at around 8:30 p.m. and shot him twice. Sy’s teenage daughter witnessed the shooting and that the suspect escaped on foot.
His family, according to CMFR, thought that the photojournalist’s being vocal against the illegal drug trade in the community could be the motive behind the killing. CMFR added that Sy had contributed a photo report of a drug-related killing sometime in January or February this year.
