Pakistan Press Foundation condemns attack on photojournalist in Nigeria

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), an independent non-governmental institution committed to promoting and defending freedom of expression is concerned over attack on a photojournalist of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Callistus Ewelike on January 13, 2014 in Nyanya area of Abuja. Ewelike was assigned to the presidency as President Goodluck Jonathan’s media photographer.

Quoting the information from Media Rights Agenda (MRA), PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in a letter to the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria said, Quote “Callistus Ewelike was shot in front of his house after returning from covering the commissioning of a power project by President Goodluck Jonathan in Shape, Abuja. He was shifted to National Hospital in Abuja for surgery. The incident took place when two men riding on a motorcycle reportedly confronted the photographer, and later one of them shot him and they managed to flee away. Ewelike has been attacked by gunmen for the second time. Last year, some armed men broke into his house and took away his camera, laptop and a few personal things”.

PPF condemns attack on journalist in Nyanya, Abuja and demands of the Government of Nigeria to hold an impartial inquiry of the incident and ensure safety and security of journalists.
