Pakistan Herald Publications Limited (PHPL) challenges discrimination

KARACHI- Pakistan Herald Publications (Pvt) Limited (PHPL) has challenged the action of the Pakistan Defence Officers Housing Authority (DHA) and the Clifton Cantonment Board (CCB) to restricting the cable television operation of the PHPL to a small self-made zone in the Defence Housing Authority, while granting permission to Infohighway and others, says a press release.

The challenge is based on the argument that newspapers worldwide are using cable services for dissemination of news, and the action of the DHA and the CCB infringes on the freedom of the Press. It was also urged that the PHPL has been singled out and unlawfully discriminated against and that other organizations have been granted permission to operate in several zones at a time in disregard of the advertised conditions of the DHA which provided that one applicant would he permitted to operate in one zone only.

A division bench of the Sindh High Court consisting of Justice Ghulam Nabi Soomro and Justice Anwar Jamali has issued notice to the deputy attorney-general, the DHA and the CCB for Oct 12.
