No ‘press advice’ to Media, says ISPR chief
ISLAMA.BAD: There will be no “press advice” to print or electronic media as the military authorities believed in the freedom of press, says the ISPR chief.
Brig Rashid Qureshi, the director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations, told Dawn on Saturday that as long as the military was controlling the affairs of the country, no press advice would be given to the newspapers, radio or TV.
“There is absolutely no censorship and we would not interfere in the affairs of the newspapers and electronic media,” he declared.
Responding to a question, he said the government would soon be announcing its policy to allow private radio and television to operate. “We plan to give licences for private radio and TV channels and in this behalf, the government would hold consultations with journalists of repute,” he stated.
Answering another question, he said the formation of the National Security Council would be announced in a day or so. The chief executive, Gen Pervez Musharraf, he said, has been holding consultations with senior military officials as well as civilians to select suitable people for induction into the NSC and the federal cabinet.
Brig Rashid said that after the formation of the NSC, at most by Monday, the cabinet could be formed by the end of next week.
Asked what was the nature of charges against deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, the ISPR chief said he did not have details, but “I can say that no decision has been taken so far to try Sharif under any military act as has been misreported in the press.”
Answering a question, he said the chief executive would hold a news conference immediately after the NSC and the federal cabinet were in place at the end of next week.
