Newsweek issue banned

ISLAMABAD- The government has banned this week’s edition of Newsweek, the US-based weekly, because it carries stories and images that are harmful to Muslim faith.

Bookstores said that this week’s edition of the weekly, which is available on Tuesdays of every week, did not even hit the stands as the government banned the February 11 edition.

Sources in the government said that it directed the agent of Newsweek in Pakistan not to circulate the issue following government’s decision to ban it.

The first review copy that reached the censor department was enough to put a ban.

According to reports the edition carries quite a few images and sketches of Prophet Mohammad but this could not be confirmed because the copy is not available in Pakistan.

However, the sources said that the images were enough to incite religious sentiments, therefore, the decision to ban it was taken.
