Newspaper office ransacked in Gilgit

GILGIT- The activists of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) attacked the bureau office of a weekly newspaper for the staff’s refusal to print a statement of their district president.

At around 12.30pm, some PPP activists stormed the weekly Naqqara’s office and smashed windows, furniture and telephones. They manhandled Syed Ali, a staff reporter of the weekly.

The activists also assaulted Alamgir Hussain, the bureau chief of the weekly, and threatened him.

When contacted, the management of the publication said the activists attacked their office following exchange of hot words because they wanted to get a “bogus and baseless” press release of PPP Gilgit District President Mohammad Musa published.

The police arrived at the scene after the incident.

The members of Gilgit Press Club, Gilgit Union of Journalists and Gilgit Association of Environmental Journalists condemned the incident and termed it an attack on the freedom of the press. They demanded an immediate probe into the incident and action against the culprits.
