Newspaper employees considering protest

KARACHI- The representatives of journalists and newspaper employees have called upon Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf to take notice of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) decision in which the organization of the newspapers owners has tried to shirk its duty by threatening to disown its responsibility towards the legally established the 7th Wage Board.

At a joint meeting of the office-bearers of the All Pakistan Newspapers Employees Confederation (APNEC), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Karachi Union of journalists (KUJ) and CBAs, they recalled that the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), after taking all advantages from the government, had announced the boycott of the proceedings of the 7th Wage Board to avoid their financial responsibility towards employees.

The meeting requested APNEC and the PFUJ to call their executive council sessions in Islamabad on January 29 to finalize a protest programme to build up public opinion against the decision of the APNS.

The meeting, in the meantime, urged the APNS to meet its legal requirements of the wage board instead of violating its commitment. It said if the owners failed to change their attitude, the employees of the newspaper industry would have no option but to launch a protest campaign, for which the owners of the newspapers would be held responsible.
