Newspaper editor attacked

QUETTA, April 16 2005: The executive editor of daily Mashriq, Quetta, Mr Kamran Mumtaz, was attacked by some people in his office on Friday. It was reported that three persons barged into the office of Mr Mumtaz and asked him why was his newspaper not publishing statements and press releases of their party.

The assailants, who were carrying weapons, attacked Mr Kamran and when staff members tried to get hold of them they threatened to fire on them. They left the place when the armed guard of the company confronted them.

Meanwhile, a joint meeting of the Balochistan Editors Council, Balochistan Union of Journalists and Newspapers Hawkers’ Association strongly condemned the incident and described it as an attack on freedom of the press.
