MINGORA: On the intervention of the military authorities and the district administration journalists were released on late Sunday night, who had been arrested by Swat police on Sunday.

A meeting of the office-bearers of journalists and a number of political parties, lawyers and traders associations, including ANP, PPP, Swat Bar Association, and Swat Traders Federation, held in the office of the deputy commissioner on Monday, condemned the police action against the newsmen and registration of fake cases against them.

It was decided at the meeting to release the newsmen and withdraw cases against the them.

The local police had on Sunday arrested Ali Hazrat Bacha of daily Dawn, Juma Rahman of Mashriq, Ghafoor Khan of Shumal, Hazrat Bilal of daily Jihad, Ghulam Farooq of The Frontier Posts, and Salim Khan of daily Aaj.

The journalists said that they would continue their boycott of the government functions unless DIG Sultan Hanif Orakzai and DSP Danishwar were transferred from the area. The office-bearers of the Swat Union of Journalists and the Swat Press Club pledged to continue their strike against the injustices of the police. —
