Newsmen barred from Musharraf ‘s function

KARACHI- More than three dozen journalists representing almost all the newspapers and news agencies of the country and also the Pakistan Television team of cameraman carrying security clearance cards of the Press Information Department were pushed out from the banquet hall where the Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf was the chief guest at a businessmen gathering of the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Security staff checked the credentials of the journalists at the entry points and allowed them access to the main corridor of the hotel, which leads, towards the banquet hall. It was at the main door of the hall the security staff demanded proper invitation cards from the journalists. The staff was told that journalists were there to cover the speeches of the Chief Executive and the leaders of the business community and carry security clearance cards given by the PID, a practice which has been observed all along and respected by the law enforcement agencies.

An impromptu meeting of the reporters and photographers condemned the attitude of the law enforcement agencies, which it observed was unprecedented, and violated the spirit of the freedom of the press being advocated by the Chief Executive and other government functionaries.
