‘New LG system not to affect Sindh’s functioning’

KARACHI: The new local government system would be formed in such a way in which functioning of the Sindh government would not be affected, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah said on Monday while speaking at a press conference.

Speaking after the Sindh Assembly passed the initial amendments of the Sindh Local Government Ordinance of 2001, the chief minister said the government wanted to bring the new local government system keeping in view the province’s financial and political situation.

He said former president Pervez Musharraf had only devolved functions of provinces to the local governments, not of the federation; under the Article 140 of the Constitution, provinces have to give powers to local governments, but the way in which functioning of provinces are not affected.

The government will soon make legislation for introducing a new local government system and it would reflect the aspirations of the common people, he added. He said the Sindh government wants to conduct the forthcoming elections under the Election Commission of Pakistan.
