Nazim asks officials to finalise master plan: Garment City project

KARACHI: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal has directed the authorities concerned to finalise the master plan for the proposed Garment City project soon. Chairing a high-level meeting at his office, the nazim said that the project in question was one of the major projects of the city, which should be launched on priority basis to boost garment sector.The nazim was briefed that the proposed Garment City would be constructed on 296-acre land in Baldia Town, where an industrial zone would soon be established and office blocks, accommodation for labourers and other facilities would be constructed.He was of the view that such projects would not only help boost national economy but also reduce unemployment and poverty. Mr Kamal asked all officials concerned including consultants to finalise the project’s master plan and make it a part of the city’s master plan.

He directed the officials to submit all relevant details along with its master plan in the next meeting scheduled to be held in the first week of January.The meeting was attended by Karachi Garment City chairman Aziz Memon, Director Masood Naqi, Wajid Jawad, representatives of textile industries, secretary industry, members of consultant firm Nespak, DCO Karachi Fazlur Rehman, and other senior officials.EID ARRANGEMENTS: The city nazim said that Karachiites would face no problem on the occasion of Eidul Azha as the city government along with towns and UCs had finalised all steps to maintain smooth flow of traffic and effective disposal of offal. He said this during a visit to various parts of the city to review pace of the ongoing uplift projects and arrangements being taken for Eid. The nazim also reviewed the under construction drainage system along the Hassan Square, Karsaz and Sohrab Goth flyovers and said that such a drainage system would benefit the citizens.

He said that he had made it mandatory to install drainage system along with all new roads, flyovers, bridges in the future. Mr Kamal said the city government was completing repairs of all roads leading to the cattle market on top priority so as to avoid inconvenience or traffic jams particularly due to the uplift work at Sohrab Goth flyover. He also visited the signal-free corridor from Airport to SITE, Altaf Hussain Haali Road, Shahrah-i-Pakistan and other projects like 8000 Road etc. He inspected the carpeting work on Malir and Surjani Town roads leading to cattle market. He said that the newly-formed municipal services department of the city government would supervise cleanliness drive and disposal of offal in cooperation with local administrations.
