Navtec to train 1,900 youth in telecom

ISLAMABAD: The National Vocational and Technical Education Commission (Navtec) on Thursday approved a scheme worth Rs25 million to train 1,900 youth in telecommunication field at various telecom training institutes.

The approval came at the sixth meeting of board of directors of the commission.

The board also approved the purchase of equipment at cost of Rs15 million under the Centre of Excellence Programme for five centres to be established in different parts of the country.

These centres would be twinned with UK’s partner institutes.

The board also decided to commence short-term skill development courses under PM’s Hunarmand Pakistan Programme at different technical education institutes at Mangla Cantonment and Kharian Cantonment at the cost of Rs24 million where training would be imparted to 540 men and 430 women in different trades.The board also accorded approval to various schemes under which nearly 2,800 youth from Swat, D.I. han and Tank would be given training in different skills with the cost of Rs42 million.

The board further approved upgradation of government colleges of technology for men and women at Multan at the cost of Rs30 million.

On the occasion, Navtec Chairman Adnan A. Khawaja said as many as 12 skill competitions were arranged at the provincial headquarters last year with the objective to encourage youth to excel in their respective trades, standardise level of skills in each province and promote exchange of ideas and experiences.

He said over 100,000 young people were imparted training in various disciplines of trade and industry in 2009 under the Fun-i Maharat Programme and the Prime Minister’s Hunarmand Programme. Mr Khawaja said there was an established linkage between economic growth and investment in human capital.

Navtec Executive Director Aziz Ahmed Bilour briefed the board members about the details of the projects.

He said that on the directive of the prime minister, a sub-office of the commission had been set up at Gwadar to focus on remote areas of Balochistan for technical and vocational training.

In this regard, the board decided to create six posts for the office to run its activities.
