National Assembly passes Maritime Security Agency Bill

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Monday passed Maritime Security Agency (Amendment) Bill 2012 with majority vote. The bill carrying four amendments in different clauses was moved to the house by Minister for Defence Syed Naveed Qamar.

Presenting it to the house, the minister said that the bill would be conveying and facilitating the recognition of Pakistan Maritime Security Agency as a law enforcement agency. He said that the objective of the change in the status of Maritime Security Agency was for establishing its identity as a national government organisation, both at national and international levels. Naveed Qamar said that as other countries were following similar practice or designation like US Coast Guard and Indian Coast Guard etc the change in nomenclature was being brought through an amendment in the Act of Parliament 1994. Moreover, Juvenile Justice System (Amendment) Bill was also moved to the house to amend the Juvenile Justice System Ordinance 2000.
