National Assembly panel discusses bill on amendments to Pemra Ordinance

ISLAMABAD, January 19 2006: A meeting of the mediation committee was held here on Wednesday January 18 under the Chairmanship of Dr Sher Afgan to discuss the bill on amendments to Pemra Ordinance, 2002.

Matiullah Jan, Media Law Policy Adviser, Internews Pakistan, gave detailed presentation to the committee on the proposed Pemra (Amendments).

He proposed that the strength of Pemra board may be increased from 10 to 14 and representatives of the stakeholders may be included on the Pemra board. Upon this, Pemra responded that the presence of stakeholders on the board will amount to conflict of interest and the same was hit by conflict of interest clauses of Pemra Ordinance.

He also proposed that one member from the four provinces on the Pemra board may be nominated by the province itself and not by Pemra. Pakistan Broadcasters Association Secretary General Arshad Zuberi and other media bodies representatives also briefed the committee on various sections of the proposed amendments.

The member of the mediation committee posed various questions to the stakeholders as well as the officials of Pemra, which were responded to. After the presentation of the stakeholders, it was decided that the next meeting of the mediation committee would be held on February 2.
