National Accountability Bureau distances itself from corruption charge on Punjab

ISLAMABAD: Media has misreported chairman NAB Admiral Fasih Bokhari’s statement regarding 65 percent share of Punjab in the overall corruption in the country, NAB officials say.

The spokesman of NAB Zafar Iqbal told The News Chairman NAB had pointed out that total per day corruption figure given by him was for the whole country and as Punjab population is 65% percent of the total population so they are also responsible. He said that it was never said that 65% of the total corruption was being committed by Punjab.

Sources told The News that besides this corruption in the form of commissions and bribes in different contracts, appointments etc, the major part of corruption, as pointed out by chairman NAB, was carried out through massive tax evasion.

The tax evasion, sources said, is a disease, which is equally spread across the whole country, and thus Punjab’s share in the overall corruption is prominently clear and dominant.Meanwhile a Punjab government spokesman has said that each and every contract involving Rs50 million or more is always sent to NAB for scrutiny and the bureau has never ever objected to any single contract awarded by the government of Punjab.
