Nadra begins issuing Smart ID cards for orphan children

Pakistan Press Foundation

National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) on Tuesday said it has started issuing Smart ID cards to children of registered orphanages free of cost and so far registered more than 1,200 orphans since its launch last month. The number is on the increase with the launch of Smart card for children as the objective of this initiative was to empower destitute children with identity.

A senior official at Nadra said after successful launch of chip-based Smart National Identity Card (SNIC) for adult population the authority has started issuing such cards to children. The official said the authority has shown its unflinching commitment at policy and technical levels as now children without known parentage will have the fundamental right to be the citizen of Pakistan and get an identity under section 9 of Nadra Ordinance 2000.

The fundamental rights, however, were not accorded to children with unknown parentage. With the completion of registration process of orphanages, no individual (orphan) can be deprived of fundamental rights as ensured in the constitution, said the official. The official said in case of unknown parentage, orphanage will provide an affidavit stating the supposed names of parents, adding that Smart Card to such orphans will be issued on gratis basis, ie free of cost. In this connection, he said Nadra mobile teams are visiting registered orphanages across the country.
